How to calculate the score you need on your final
Overall grade = current grade × (1 − final weight) + final exam score × final weight. Plug in the grade you want and solve for the final exam score:
Score needed = (grade you want − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Example: your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 30% and you want 90%. You'd need (90 − 85 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 101.67% on the final — more than a perfect score, so 90% is out of reach. Aim for 85% instead and an 85% on the final is enough.
How to use it
- “Current grade” is the weighted average of all homework, quizzes and midterms before the final. Your school's grade portal usually shows it.
- “Final exam weight” is in your course syllabus, e.g. the final counts for 20% or 30% of the overall grade.
- A, B, C and D use the common 90 / 80 / 70 / 60 cutoffs. If your school or teacher uses different cutoffs, just enter that number as the grade you want.
- With extra credit your grade can go above 100%; you can enter up to 200% here.
FAQ
What does a result above 100% mean?
Even a perfect score on the final won't get you there. Aim one grade lower, or ask your teacher about extra credit.
What if the result is 0 or negative?
You'd reach your goal even with a 0 on the final. Many courses still require you to take or pass the final, so check your course rules.
